We’re All About Slow-Melting Ice

Image
Ice is an essential ingredient in cocktails. But not all ice is created equal. DrinksPlinks is all about ice that melts  S-L-O-W-L-Y.  But why?  Slow-melting ice is best in cocktails because it chills your drink, not dilutes it. [And no one wants that.] Large-format ice has a lower surface area compared to smaller ice cubes or crushed ice, which means it melts much more slowly.  Any ice is going to melt and add water to your drink which can dilute the flavours and change the balance of your cocktail. A drink that becomes too diluted will lose its intended flavour profile, so the larger the ice, the slower it melts.  Slow-melting ice also chills your drink without rapidly altering its temperature. When ice melts too quickly, your drink becomes too cold too fast, which can numb your taste buds and make it difficult to appreciate the subtleties of your cocktail. With slow-melting ice, your drink stays at a more consistent temperature, allowing the flavors to ...

Sinterklaas - A Tasty Dutch Tradition You Can Make Yourself

Image
We love this Dutch tradition of gifting chocolate letters to family and friends in the lead-up to Christmas.  The custom marks the Dutch holiday known as Sinterklaas on 6 December.  Who is Sinterklaas Sinterklass is a legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children. The feast of Sinterklaas is celebrated with the giving of gifts on St. Nicholas' Eve (5 December) in the Netherlands and on the morning of 6 December, Saint Nicholas Day, in Belgium, Luxembourg, and northern France. Before going to bed, children each leave a single shoe next to the fireplace or a door, with a carrot for Sinterklaas' horse.   The next day they find little gifts left by Sinteklauss. Traditional treats include mandarins and oranges, baked pastry letters and more recently chocolate letters.  The letters correspond to the first letter of each child’s name. They’re made from dark, milk or white chocolate, sometimes with hazelnuts or fruit & nut. They can b...

Let’s Talk Tequila & Win

Image
Australia’s tequila expert introduces us to a whole new world.  Tequila likes to party. Think late-night shots in a noisy bar when you probably should have been home hours ago. Tequila’s up for whatever’s going down. We’re talking rounds of fiery shots, lots of salt, and wedges of lime. Sound familiar? [We also remember the headache the next day …  and it wasn’t pretty.] Just like us, tequila has grown up. We sat down with Brad Woolf from www.topshelftequila.com.au to discover why Australians are falling in love with this sophisticated spirit and why it’s completely different from the shots we partied with years ago.  Brad says those shots are actually poorly made, mass production Mixto not 100% agave Tequila. They’re a mixture of fermentable sugars from the agave plant (a fleshy succulent native to Mexico) and 49% “other” sugar (usually cane sugar) with additional flavouring, colouring, aromas and glycerin for added mouthfeel. Mixto was developed in Mexico in the 1...
